I received this Vacuum about a month ago. This is the first canister vacuum I have ever owned. The suction works great on carpet and my hard wood floor as well. It does not kick dust and debri back out like my old vacuum did. It fits nicely under my couches, beds, and dining room table.I love that you can adjust the level of suction so you can use it on different throw rugs in the house. The dirt trap needs to be emptied often.I carry a plastic bag with me and empty when needed. It helps keep dust down. The hose detaches easily at the top near handle or at the bottom at the touch of a button with your foot. It is not loud either. Overall I am very happy with this vacuum.I am glad I purchased after reading tons of other reviews on other vacuums.

Product Description:
Equipped with Hoover's patented WindTunnel technology and three distinct air tunnels, this bagless canister vacuum cleaner effectively lifts and removes dirt and debris, trapping it inside the cleaner instead of scattered back out on the floor. Its fingertip controls offer comfortable access to the power button, suction control, and brush-roll switch. Turn the rotating brush on when vacuuming low- to high-pile carpets and rugs; flip the switch off for safely cleaning hardwood and other bare-floor surfaces. A foot-petal control adjusts the nozzle to accommodate different carpet heights and floor types. For above-floor cleaning, the vacuum provides a 7-foot hose, a detachable telescopic wand, and a variety of on-board tools. Use the turbo tool for stairs; the crevice tool for between couch cushions or other tight spots; the dusting brush for bookshelves, vents, and lamp shades; and the upholstery brush for curtains, living-room chairs, couches, and more. The unit's multi-stage cyclonic filtration system keeps the air that moves through the filter substantially cleaner than the air being pulled into the vacuum, which helps ensure the vacuum doesn't lose suction power when cleaning. Plus, its filter comes with HEPA media, which effectively traps 99.97-percent of dirt, dust, and pollens down to 0.3 microns in size. Other highlights include a 14-inch-wide nozzle, swivel casters for smooth maneuverability, a headlight, an easy-empty dirt cup (no bags to buy), a 25-foot power cord, and automatic cord rewind at the push of a button. The 12 amp canister vacuum cleaner measures approximately 25-3/5 by 14 by 17 inches and carries a six-year limited warranty.

Hoover SteamVac Carpet Cleaner with Clean Surge, F5914-900 Review

Hoover SteamVac Carpet Cleaner with Clean Surge, F5914-900
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If your new machine LEAKS, see note #2 below. I am just amazed at how many people write that their machine leaked from day one, and they returned it. It will leak if you skip a crucial one-time set-up step.

Paid $170 at Best Buy. This is my first carpet cleaner so I have nothing to compare it to except my own expectations. Even though the name is SteamVac, like all the others in this class of cleaners, there is no Steam to it. That's just false marketing, but all the manufacturers do it, so no particular knock on Hoover.

First, let me say I'm ashamed to admit that our carpet hadn't been cleaned in 4 years, and that we live in the country where lots of dirt gets tracked in from outside. So the carpet was pretty darn dirty. The Hoover F5914-900 did a very nice job the first time I used it - a drastically noticeable difference in the appearance of the carpet. The water in the dirty water receptacle was black. Did it return the carpet to new condition? No, impossible. Did it take another treatment or two to really get it clean? Yes, that is the price I pay for ignoring wet-cleaning the carpet for years. One of this cleaner's best features is the ability to dry the carpet quite thoroughly. Since the front of the machine is made of clear plastic, you can see when you're vacuuming up water. If you want to dry the carpet as much as possible, keep vacuuming until you no longer see water being pulled up. As time has passed, the SteamVac has done an excellent job of maintaining my carpets.

My only gripe is that the dirty water container fills up too quickly and should be a little bigger. Ideally, the dirty water receptacle "should" be full right as you run out of clean water. Then, you shut down, empty the dirty water, refill the clean water and back to work. But this process gets out-of-sync with the dirty water receptacle filling up before you run out of clean water. So this can be a little inconvenient, but not a show-stopper.

The machine is well constructed but it IS plastic, with lots of compartments and latches and hose holders, etc, so one must simply be careful or those things will no doubt break off.A few other notes:
1. If you are not the type to read manuals, do read this one. Assembly and operation are easy if you sit down and read the manual through before starting. It's not like a vacuum cleaner where you just plug it in and go.

2. My machine leaked badly BUT it was my own fault. There is a one-time only setup procedure where you squeeze the trigger and push the Clean-Surge button to lock a rod into place. Push the Clean-Surge button firmly. There may be a loud SNAP which sounds like you broke something, but you didn't. Until you get that snap, the Clean-Surge (which releases extra water-cleaner solution) is on all the time, hence the leaking. I didn't push the button hard enough initially, so I had the leak problem.

EDIT December 2007
Apparently many people are assuming that without a loud snap, the Clean Surge will not work. All that matters is that your machine doesn't leak. If your SteamVac doesn't leak, it is assembled properly and the Clean Surge will work!!! The only reason I emphasized the "snap" was because so many people were having leak problems, which are easily solved. And it's possible that Hoover has changed the design after getting so many returns from people who didn't read the instructions in the manual. So don't get hung up on the snap. If your machine does leak after assembly, you know what to do.

3. ANY time it seems like there is no suction, the problem is that something is not seated properly. It is easy to snap the lid onto the dirty water container without lining it up properly, which causes a vacuum leak. If there is a vacuum leak, there is no suction at the bottom of the machine, where it is needed to suck up water from the carpet. Plus you'll see that the brushes aren't turning, as they're driven by vacuum. So recheck the dirty water lid. Carefully line up the hinges at the back. The front should snap closed very easily. If you have to force it a little to snap it closed, it means the back is not aligned properly and you'll get no suction.

4. If you have velvet or velvetine furniture, do NOT use the powered tool, use the utility tool. The powered tool is too strong for delicate fabric.

5. Like others have suggested, find a cheap alternative to the Hoover brand carpet detergent. One gallon of water doesn't clean a lot of carpet, and at 5 oz of soap per gallon, you go thru it fast.

6. Always be sure to dry vacuum your carpet with a regular vacuum cleaner first before using this machine to wash it. Be sure to remove and clean the brushes when you're done using this machine. Otherwise hair, thread, and balled up carpet fibers will dry on them and between them. Then the brushes won't turn. These are not "use and put away" machines like vacuum cleaners, they're "use, clean, and put away".

7. Here's something I do which you *might* want to try. For a very dirty carpet, I fill a cheap plastic 2 gallon watering can (or smaller for a smaller carpet) with hot water and a tablespoon or 2 of Oxy Clean. I then sprinkle the carpet heavily, being careful not to soak it. Then use the Hoover normally. Of course, this fills up the waste water receptacle long before the soapy water container is empty, but it still saves trips to the sink to load up on clean, soapy water.

8. Others have suggested using boiling water. Not for me, thanks. Too dangerous to handle and unnecessary, unless you've spilled or tracked in grease.

After reading countless reviews here, I have concluded that the problems people have encountered are from failing to properly set up the machine initially, failing to seat the dirty water lid properly, or failing to clean the machine after use. I recommend this Hoover. It won't perform miracles, but I think if it is not abused it will last a long time and do an excellent job of maintaining a carpet.

Hoover UH70015 Platinum Collection Cyclonic Bagless Upright Vacuum Cleaner Review

Hoover UH70015 Platinum Collection Cyclonic Bagless Upright Vacuum Cleaner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently had to pick up a new vacuum when my old vacuum (an upright that wasn't supposed to lose suction, but which broke down and stopped sucking altogether. At least stopped sucking dirt from the floor, that is) went kaput, and I did some research, trying to find one that was sturdy, had the extra tools, and really picked up dirt. I have two large-ish (50 - 70 pound) dogs that shed a bit, track in some dirt, and can cause carpet chaos, so I really wanted to bring home a powerhouse this time. I liked the early reviews I'd seen on this new Hoover Platinum, and liked how it combined cyclonic action (which I thought was one of those marketing terms, but which actually makes some cleaning sense) and Hoover's own Windtunnel mechanisms (my mom swears by her Hoover she's had forever with this, and hey, you have to be able to trust your mom, right), and so decided it was the vacuum for me. And, I'm darn happy so far that I did. It just picks up more dirt and dog hair from the carpet and upholstery than any vacuum I've had so far, and is great for cleaning all of a big house. Sometimes you just want to spot clean, but if you really want to get at cleaning, and really want cleaning power, this is the vacuum for those jobs. All the tools are a plus, too (especially the long hose and the crevice tool, which are perfect for stairs. Oh, the dusting brush is oddly handy, too. I've never really had one of those that worked that well, but this one's tops. Maybe it's just that the engine and all deliver enough power to make the dusting brush worthwhile, but I use it all the time), and it looks great, and the 6-year warranty is nice, but really, without the suction and dirt-pulling ability, would anything else matter? Nope, which is why I'm glad I made the right choice and went for this new Platinum vaccum, because it really picks up the dirt.

I've been looking for a small vacuum to leave upstairs in my house so I wouldn't have to lug a heavy Sears POS canister vac around. I saw this in Bed, Bath, and Beyond for $99 and with a 20% off coupon i bought it for $80. This vac is relatively quiet, has very good suction, is light and the bag less feature doesn't bother me as i figure I'm saving money on bags. I have 2 dogs so pet hair is a problem but not with this vac. The only gripe I have and it is a minor one is the cord could be a little longer but it is retractable. I would give it a six star rating if it had a power nozzle but what do you expect for $80.

Eureka R Style Belts Review

Eureka R Style Belts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What can one say about a belt; it either works or it doesn't.

I've noticed complaints about the belt breaking frequently on the Eureka 4870. I think that is due in large part to the manual operation of the height adjustment.

The height should be adjusted to the highest level that actually works on the carpet being vacuumed. If it is adjusted too low, the resistance from the carpet versus the powerful motor on the 4870 stresses the belt too much and it breaks.

I've used the same belt on my 4870 for well over two years and it seems to be as good as new. I have a fairly thick carpet and adjust the height to the next to the highest position for most of the carpeted areas of the house. We have some rugs and other carpeted areas where I need to drop the height down, but usually the third level down from the highest works well on those. Properly adjusted the 4870 cleans very well, fluffs up the carpet, and extends the belt life.

The bottom line on this is if you don't stress the belt by adjusting the height too low for the carpet; the belt can last for years.

I was excited to receive this product as a gift. I use a keyboard about 12 hours a day, and require a clean working environment. This product was a disappointment.

The design is awkward to hold. It takes up a lot of room, as it must be set on a flat surface (no wall mount). The brush/nozzle attachment doesn't stay in the back of the unit like it is supposed to, and it goes flying every time I pick up the unit.

The suction is atrocious! I will see hair or a big piece of dusk on my keyboard and it simply will not suck it up. A quick exhale through rounded lips removes more dust that this useless thing.

Also, I'm a little bit worried that people are going to think it's some sort of teledildonic device, being shaped the way it is and being plugged in to my computer. Just sayin'.

Recommended alternatives are cans of compressed air for deep dirt removal, and Swiffer Dusters for routine dust removal.

Eureka 4870GZ Boss Smart-Vac Upright Vacuum Review

Eureka 4870GZ Boss Smart-Vac Upright Vacuum
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Edited to say that I've now had and used the Eureka vacuum DAILY for 2.5 years, and my review wouldn't change. This Eureka has been durable and held up well except that the end of the hose where you put attachments on had chipped and cracked some. The only time I've had to replace a belt is when *I* or one of my "helpful" kids vacuumed up something like a stuffed animal or sock. I've been very happy with it and would highly recommend going to check this one out!I still think this is a top choice in the under $300 vacuums. So how did it still compare to the recently received Dyson DC18 Total Access(approximate retail $400 to $500 vacuum) as a gift from someone who knew I considering a Dyson at the time I purchased this? It's kind of like comparing apples to oranges since these aren't even in the same price category, but for those who have wondered....I've tried to do a main points comparison where applicable.

I have the 4870GZ model. It's metallic red and comes with the Power Paw (mini turbo) tool. [The Dyson I now have is the DC18 Total Access with extra accessories but didn't include the mini Turbine head which is $59 by itself.Fortunately the Eureka power paw fits and works with the DC18.]

I am going to rate the Eureka vacuum 5 stars even though I have a few neutral and one negative points. The reason for this high rating is that I have found it is simply the overall best choice for me in the under $300 price category and was only 1/2 of that--paid about $160, I think!

Pros:

Customer Service! It was so nice to have a 1-800 toll-free number to call and actually get to speak to a live representative!

Eureka's web site has good product information, and instructions can be downloaded.

Solid construction.

I haven't found any vacuums in the under $300 range with better suction.[The Dyson suction might have a little more suction, but I certainly did not pull up bags full of stuff that was left behind like you would from cheaper vacuums--maybe the same or a little more than I would have with the Boss and a new bag.]

Sealed HEPA filter that is easy to replace.Unlatch door, remove and replace filter, latch door.Eureka recommends replacing this filter every six bag changes or twice a year. They are about $20 a piece.I did notice that a washable HEPA filter cartridge could be ordered on the parts form included with the instructions for only $39.99.[Dyson DC18 comes with a washable HEPA filter.]

Foam filter that protects motor.

On/off brush roller. This is a convenient feature when only the hose is needed or to vacuum linoleum floors. This saves wear/tear on carpet if vacuuming drapes, upholstery, or something like that.Because the brush head is not turning, I can actually vacuum up the crumbs on the kitchen floor instead of scatter them.On/off brush is a hard-to-find feature in vacuums under $200--at least around here. [DC18 has this feature.]

The bag is easy to install.A guide holds the bag in proper place.Note:the front plastic piece of the vacuum will be difficult to latch if a bag is not installed. It's a feature to ensure the bag is correctly installed for maximum performance.[A push button releases the Dyson canister.Push down on a lever on the contents of the canister drop into the trash, but you might have to "help" it out.]

This vacuum can use the allergy/filtration bags which I found locally for about $2 a piece.[The Dyson uses a canister so no bags to buy, washable HEPA filter, and is certified asthma friendly.]

Headlight feature is nice for dark rooms.Replacing the bulb is as easy as removing two screws, the lens cover and old bulb and replacing with new and reattaching lens cover with two screws.[DC18 did not have a headlight.I miss this feature.]

Assembly was easy. The handle is attached by three screws.Click the onboard tools in place on the vacuum's housing.[Dyson's assembly was easy too.]

The vacuum comes with two nesting wands, crevice, dusting brush, and upholstery tools which snap firmly into the housing. This model also came with a Power Paw tool (mini turbo tool) that really worked well on my furniture compared to just using the upholstery tool.[Dyson comes in several models with most of the difference being the particular tools that come with it.]

Vacuum is designed to allow easy access to clear blockages if this condition occurs.Plus, some of the tubes are even clear so you can see if there is anything in them before taking it apart. Really nice feature!

12 amp. motor., 30 foot power cord, and reinforced plastic around roller brush housing, are nice extras.[DC18's cord is shorter, about 25 feet, that I have to plug it in two different places in order to do the whole house...might need to get an extension cord.I was able to vacuum the whole house from one outet with the Eureka.]

I thought the user's guide stated what needed to be stated clearly and had good illustrations.

Neutral Points:

The vacuum is heavy which may be a disadvantage for some.It wasn't a disadvantage for me.Even though I am extra small, I have no physical conditions that limit movement, and our home is just a single level. Also, it's not "cheap made" so it's going to weigh more for that reason.[The Dyson weighs about 15 lbs. so it noticeably lighter.Only time will tell how durable it is.]

The stretchy hose was too short for the task I do, but Eureka does include their 5:1 stretch hose (deluxe version).I needed more flexibility and length.I am putting this as a neutral point since some vacuums in this class either don't have a hose at all OR you must convert (unplug hose for vacuum and then insert hose for tools and then again reverse this process when you are done) the vacuum to use the hose. With this vacuum, I simply turn a knob (air selector switch) located on top of the vacuum.[The DC18 hose is really nice and very usuable.Leave vacuum in upright position to use.]

The handle release (pedal you step on) and brush roll on/off switch are a little stiff at first. In particular, the brush on/off switch may be difficult to operate for someone that has limited strength in their hands or a condition that makes it physicaly difficult to manipulate objects like this.[Dyson has a step-on latch that easily releases the vacuum from upright to vacuum position and a push-button to turn the brush on/off.]

Negative Point:

I don't see an option to order a longer, stretchier hose. The hose on the unit could have been longer since it is stretched some even when stored.

NOTES:

I did a quick test of comparing the different vacuums' suction by just testing the suction from the hose.Eureka actually has a feature that reduces some of the suction to the hose--a nice feature so you don't suck in the whole drape or something like that instead of just vacuum it off. However, I haven't found any vacuum in the under $300 rangewith more suction when it comes to cleaning carpets and floors. Some are the close or the same, but I haven't found any with better suction.Anyway keep this in mind if trying to compare suction at the store where you might not get to actually compare what is vacuumed up.

The Eureka is so often compared to the Dyson in terms of suction so that is why I've updated this review, but one has to remember that you could buy almost THREE Eureka's for the price of the Dyson DC18.As far as suction goes, I think both models are very comparable. Where the Dyson should be better over time is you get that "new bag" suction every time. The Dyson DC18's hose, "ball" design which makes it easy to manuever, push button brush on/off, easy to use lever to release vacuum from upright position, no bags or belts to buy, and the same suction as you get with a new bag everytime may make it worth the extra. As for me, it was a gift.It was really nice because it wasn't something I would have bought myself because of the price and it improved on the neutral or negative points I had about the Eureka (but keep in mind the Eureka is much less!), I am being honest in saying I was very happy with the Eureka Boss and had not been looking to buy another.By the way,I personally prefer the DC18 over the older, heavier Dyson models.

Either choice, is a good choice so choose what's right for you and your needs :-).

I own a commercial cleaning service in New York.I have been buying this model since I discovered it in 1998.Of course, it was marketed with a different model # previously and also sold as a Kenmore at Sears. In any event, I have purchased over 500 of them since 1998.As I write this, I still have 25 or so sitting in my warehouse, still in the box.I still have a few of the originals that I bought back then still in service. They have great suction, simple to use and repair and (get this) I have never had a motor burn out!Not once! The cord is only 20 feet long and very stiff but if you take care when you rewind it, it will last forever. Some commercial manufacturers market this with some heavier duty parts and sell them for $300-$400.I have never paid more than $80 for the ones I have purchased.Using the wand is simple and quick as it is what is called a "quick draw".The bags I buy cost about a buck apiece.I own $500 back pack vacuums and some $450 commercial "dual motor" types as well.Simply put, nothing has ever given me the value I have gotten from these vacuums.Okay, so you just want one for your home, I get that. But you are reading my experience and I sincerely hope it is helpful for you.As many vacuum cleaners as I use in my business, I will never be without these as long as Panasonic continues to make them.Good Luck!

I almost didn't give this vacuum a try because of the very mixed reviews it got. This is a great vacuum, you just have to know what you want from it! I would NOT reccomend the dirt devil power stick which i tried first, it was powerful enough, but extremely loud, flimsy, and blew strong hot air out both sides of it that blew all the dirt away.

I train horses, have 2 large dogs, two small kids, one cat, and a husband. we live in the country, and my floors get as dirty as any i've ever seen! I have mostly tile floors with deep grout grooves, which other small stick vacs never have enough power to clean. This eureka has plenty of power!!! pet hair, crumbs, arena sand, litter... even out of the tile grooves! I have one small area rug that it does good enough on, though I would not reccomend this vacuum for any one that has more carpet as the vacuum head does not have a motorized beater bar. The cord is a little short- oh well :)

it is perfect for cleaning cars too. my model came with a "power paw" attatchment which does have a rotating bristle bar (powered by the suction) that is quite powerfull and the perfect size for cleaning vehicle carpets, stairs with carpet, or couch surfaces. the extension/telescoping "wand" is made from metal, the cord rewind is strong, the "exhaust" points out the back, the bags a little on the small side, but not to the point you should rule this vacuum out (they are a little smaller than a brown paper lunch sack). I actually prefere the bags to a bagless because of the mess that becomes of the dirt cups and filters; this has MUCH cleaner air coming out, too!

In regards to other reviews- This vacuum does have a crevis and apholstry tool, they are housed under the body of the vacuum at the back end. There is also a sliding plate on the handle that you can open if you want to decrease power for delicate jobs... try shutting that if you dont think its powerful enough. Don't listen to the bad reviews- If you want a vacuum for hard floors and above floor cleaning, there is no reason not to get this vac if you want to spend under $100. Hope you give it a try!

Dyson DC17 Animal Cyclone Upright Vacuum Cleaner Review

Dyson DC17 Animal Cyclone Upright Vacuum Cleaner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Strengths:
1. Best suction even among other Dyson models due to new Level 3 Root Cyclone.
2. Excellent build quality. Each piece is not an after-thought.
3. Best design - shape, color, material and operation.

Weaknesses:
1. Price - but you do pay for the technology it has to offer.
2. Heavy!
3. The cones gets clogged from fine dirt in time.

Summary: This is arguably one of the best "bagless" household vacuum cleaners money can buy. Dyson's root cyclone technology really does perform. And this latest Level 3 Root Cyclone trumps even its other models.

If you're serious about having a real clean environment, this is THE product to buy. I just moved into an apartment a month ago and they replaced the carpets in most of the area and steam cleaned the others that they deemed need not be replaced. I used the vacuum in both and I can tell you that steam cleaning old carpets may get rid of surface dirt and stains, but Dyson is your friend if you want to suck out most (if not all) the dirt hidden below the surface. I could not believe how much dust it was picking up in such a small area. The bin filled up pretty fast so I was on to round 2 in the same patch of rug. This time it was picking up very find dust. Dust that may have been stuck for years and was never sucked out from other vacuum systems. Round 3 time and you will smile when you realize there is nothing else that's being collected in the bin. As for the newly installed carpets, I could only collect find dust until no more could be collected.

Unlike other vacuums in the market, this is one heck of a quiet vacuum in a relative way. Of course it's still noisy, but as with other brands this won't hurt your noise environment. In fact I am able to vacuum even at night with no fear that my neighbors beside and above my unit will hear me.

You're not only paying for the suction technology, you're also paying for the build quality. Each part has quality reflected on it. While the design is modern.

Of course nothing is perfect. This thing is heavy. DO NOT vacuum the stairs while the machine is on the top stair because if this thing falls on you, there will be serious injury and damage.

The quick-draw expandable hose is a good idea. But it's also not as flexible as I would have imagined it to be. It's easy to expand and retract, but the long handle commands that the vacuum is at a distance from where you want to use the telescope handle if you want to operate it comfortably.

Among other bagless vacuums, this is the easiest to dump the contents. But just like all other bagless vacuums, dust will certainly be flying away from the trash unless you have a very deep trash can. Plus the fine holes around the cyclone technology gets clogged from fine dust in time so you will need to clean those tiny holes from time to time if you want the Dyson to perform it's best everytime.

The lifetime Hepa filter is a great addition below. They recommend only washing with water and drying at least 24 hours near a heater/radiator - and they really do mean 24 hours. It's big and thick so it won't dry out quickly. So if you find the need to frequently vacuum the next day, I recommend getting an extra Hepa filter to use.

The motorized brush bar helps pick up stuff from the carpet. This can be turned off for delicate rugs and floors. Just like other vacuums, hair and other long items can be trapped around the brush bar and need to be removed from time to time. It is also belt-driven so this can snap and break especially if inadvertently caught on a loose item. So be careful of this.

Overall, Dyson is a wonderful machine to have and will surely last longer if properly taken care of.
If you are extremely allergic to dust, I believe a better alternative is to go with Oreck XL as it ensures you will not be in contact with the dust particles due to it's ingenious bag design that closes shut when removed.

Product Description:
Designed for homes with pets, this Dyson upright vacuum cleaner features advanced Level 3 Root Cyclone technology to ensure thorough, efficient cleaning with no clogging or loss of suction. Dyson proves no loss of suction, best average pick up, and the claim"overall outcleans other vacuums" using results from IEC60312 Cl 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.8, 2.9, ASTM F608 and F558, and DTM 755--an independently conducted Dyson test. Effective for use on all floor types, the unit's motorized brushbar can be turned on to remove dirt and pet hair from carpets, or turned off to protect rugs and delicate floors. The vacuum cleaner also comes equipped with a quick-draw Telescope reach; the wand releases and expands 16-feet at the touch of a button for stairs and high-reach cleaning. In addition, the unit's advanced mini turbine head cleans pet hair from confined spaces such as upholstery, stairs, and the car, and its low-reach floor tool attaches to the wand to clean hard-to-reach places such as under beds and sofas.
Thoughtfully designed, the unit's hygienic 5/8-gallon bin quickly empties without ever having to touch the dust--simply pull the trigger. The clear bin means no bags to buy, plus it allows for easily viewing the cleaning progress and gauging when it's full. Air expelled from the unit contains up to 150 times less mold and bacteria than common breathing air thanks to the vacuum's money-saving, lifetime HEPA filter. Furthermore, Dyson upright vacuums are the first and only vacuums certified asthma friendly by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation. Other highlights include 220 air watts, auto carpet-height adjustment, a 35-foot cord, on-board tool storage, and an ergonomic design with a low handle that feels lighter to carry. The included carpet-care kit helps keep new carpets looking new. The Zorb powder absorbs dirt from carpets; the Dyzolve spray removes spills and marks. The durably built vacuum cleaner measures 26-2/3 by 13-1/5 by 43-1/2 inches and carries a five-year warranty.

Over the years, I have had many vacuums that took bags for dust and dirt collection. Now most vacuums have dust cups.My little hand-held Dirt Devil Vac still is going strong...and I insist on buying genuine Dirt Devil Bags. They fit properly and no cloud of dust, as with the knock-off brands....yes, I did try that once.Live and Learn.Someday when this one wears out, I will purchase the Dirt Devil hand-held with the dust cup...but for now...it's still going strong...and I always buy the Dirt Devil Bags.

Dirt Devil BD20035RED Accucharge 15.6 Volt Stick Vac with Energy Star Rating Review

Dirt Devil BD20035RED Accucharge 15.6 Volt Stick Vac with Energy Star Rating
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this Dec '09 after about two weeks of research on lightweight vacs.I needed one that could handle: LOTS of dog hair (retriever/spitz mix!), four kids, the usual kitchen crumbs, area rugs, hardwood floors, tile and very low nap carpeting (whew!). We also have a woodstove and frequently have small leaves and wood debris from the logs being brought in the house. In the past, I have tried Bissel Turbo Sweep (kept breaking) and the Shark (new version with one side brush; battery died after one year and brush roll got so full of hair that it was a pain to try to keep it clean).Tired of batteries dying or the vac dying!

A big problem with cordless vacs is that the battery will inevitably die out on you within a year because of "overcharging" it.I really liked that this vac has a "smart charger" that only charges the vac what it needs and then reduces the charge to a trickle so that the battery does not get overcharged. The charger base is about the size of a dustpan and holds the vac in place well, so you'll need a place on the floor that you can park it.Handle does fold down if that makes a difference in your storage options.

First, the "cons":plastic body feels a little flimsy; it is awkward (but doable) on steps; whole body of vac swivels and not just the nozzle when you pivot it and takes a little getting used to; handle is NOT ergonomic and vac starts to feel hand "heavy" after a while (I can still use the vac with just my forefinger wrapped around the end of the handle and that helps). Also, if you are vacuuming a very dirty rug, the dirt cup will fill quickly and will lose suction.

Now the "pros":this vac REALLY picks stuff up! I am AMAZED at the amount of dog hair, crumbs, etc this thing will pull in! (Good-bye, doggie tumbleweeds!) Great for kitchen; scatter rugs get clean without being sucked up into the vac; great on tile, hardwood and low nap carpets.I also like the brushroll on/off feature so I can go from hardwood to carpet easily. Gets the edges clean too.The head of the vac is smaller than I thought, so if you can't get the edges clean going alongside it, I can get it clean coming straight at the edge. Now things like dog food and air soft pellets (two boys) will rattle around if you vac them up, so I usually end up emptying the dirt cup if that happens. Noise is moderate; it is, after all, a vacuum.Noise increases a bit if dirt cup gets full. Fully charged initially in under six hours, and again, place it back in its charger base and it will charge only what it needs (charging light goes out when vac is fully charged again).Have not used it enough to wear out the battery charge as I try to keep it's continual use under 10 minutes. It has a two year warranty on it, which I think is above average. After I vac my den carpet, and after about every other use on regular floors, I use my big vac to really clean the filter and filter screen as that is a key to getting good suction with these type of vacs. This thing picks up so much dog hair and dirt that I usally have to empty the dirt cup out at least once when I use it on my den rug, but not having to lug my 21- pound sears vac around is worth it. If the dirt cup was larger, it would be near perfect! I currently use Swiffer sweeper pole for my hardwoods and it looks like this vac will pay for itself within six months of not having to buy those refills all the time! So, I guess the only thing left to find out now is how long this will last!

PS:The dirt cup release button looks like you depress it downward, but actually you have to press upwards on it or you might break it! Also, on deeply patterned area rugs, it does not do a good job; but again for scatter rugs and everything else I mentioned, it does.Hope this helps!
